How to set VLC as the default viewer?

I would like VLC to be the default viewer when opening a video on line.

I think you have to install mozilla-plugin-vlc

Thanks. I installed the plugin and rebooted, but Totem player is still the default. (?)

Perhaps you have to choose it from Firefox menu: Edit > Preferences > Applications

you can do this way

open menu edit>preferences>applications

search for totem in the search bar (search bar in firefox 3)

this will show list of options for totem now you can change them by clicking on ACTION part

Thank you, but after doing as you and also Savvas Radevic suggested, new .wmv e-mails received continue to open in Totem without the option to open in VLC.

Install package mozilla-plugin-vlc as Savvas Radevic suggested. Remove package totem-mozilla. Restart Firefox.

I did so, but Totem still opened. However, I then checked the box "Run in Terminal" next to typed in VLC in Preferences and it works now. When I open a .wmv it comes up in VLC! Problem solved....thanks for the help.
