how to update synaptic package manager to latest version of seamonkey

Asked by DonKaron

seamonkey 1.1.13 was recently released but Synaptic Package Manager still installs 1.1.12. How can I get Synaptic to pick up the latest update of Seamonkey?

I tried installing the new version of Seamonkey in the BASH shell but couldn't make it work (newbie here).

synaptic can install the newest version of a program available in the repositories. if the repos dont have 1.1.13 then synaptic cant install it.. (dont know if ubuntu has any repos which have 1.1.13)

u can try again to install it manually or wait till 1.1.13 is in the repos

I think there's a problem with SeaMonkey and/or Synaptic Package Manager. After a clean install of Ubuntu 8.10 a few days ago, I used the Package Manager to install SeaMonkey 1.1.12, which was easy and worked fine. However, 1.1.12 has now been superseded by SeaMonkey 1.1.14, though it isn't available from the Ubuntu repository. I tried downloading the latest tar.gz package from the SeaMonkey project site and installing it on top of 1.1.12, but the installer balked, informing me that it would only install into an empty directory. I tried uninstalling SeaMonkey 1.1.12 with the Package Manager, but the Manager failed to completely remove SeaMonkey, leaving me unable to run the now-trashed SeaMonkey installation and unable to install the later version. Since I had less than 24 hours into the system installation, I opted to blow the whole 8.10 installation away and start over from the CD. This is, in general, NOT an acceptable solution.

I like the SeaMonkey suite, and have been running it on Windows 98, Windows XP and an earlier Ubuntu 7.10 installation (manually installed) on another machine. However, where the Windows update process is painless, the Ubuntu process is anything but that.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I am also feeling a little irritated that the update repositories are stuck at Seamonkey 1.12. I keep getting error messages telling me that the security features in Seamonkey aren't being initialized correctly, and the logical first step for trying to fix this is to get the latest version.

Installing manually does not seem to be a good option.

Try using Ubuntuzilla. Ubuntuzilla is a Python script to automate the installation of SeaMonkey on Ubuntu Linux.

Home page: http://ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/

Ive used it several times since my last post here and it's made installing and upgrading SeaMonkey relatively painless. You can even use it to force installation of earlier versions, if you so choose. Make sure Python is installed on your system before you proceed.

Can you help with this problem?
