new program installation

Asked by Aaron Redding

I am having a problem installing any new applications onto Ubuntu. Specifically, my antivirus program. I can download the files, but not execute them. Can anybody help me here? This system is obviously new to me and I have a lot to learn. Any support will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Aaron

Wow.. well im also new here but as far as i know Ubuntu Linux is not prone to viruses that mean installing antivirus is not necessary.. Installing Other Application that runs on windows you can check the software wine software.. u can search it on google.. so that u can use other application on ubuntu.. hope this can help you..

As far as installing software is concerned, useing the Add/Remove applications entry in the menu is by far the easiest option. If installing windows applications is an issue, you should probably check out wine and wine-tools (both are in synaptic IIRC, or you could find them using automatix, found http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=114251 here.)

As far as Anti-virus programs are concerned, I agree with rjian, that there is no need, since viruses are exclusivly a windows problem, and just getting them to run on linux would present a serious challange (I remember a newsforge article, where they tried to infect a linux machine using wine, and failed miserably :-)).

Hope this helps

David

Your comments were very helpful. Thank you. You are also correct that the antivirus is not necessary. I have since found that out.

 Thanks,
