downloading/synaptic package manager error

Asked by Joey

When I go to try and install a new media player, codec or anything else, I'll get this message when I try to install them

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I run the terminal and type it in and it says,

dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege.

So I don't know what to do. thanks for the help, Joey.

Joey you must execute the command with root privileges. Try:
sudo dpkg --configure -a

or just login as root

That works, thanks! I'm new to Ubuntu so I browsed through the site to find an answer but all were solved and didn't show what to do. Now I know how to access the "root" user. Thanks!
