Limewire and dependencies

Asked by P0E2005

So upon trying to install Limewire, It says it need sun-java6-jre...So I tried to Install that...but it depends on ia32-sun-java6-bin or sun-java6-bin , and upon trying to get them...they both depend on sun-java6-jre..

So my question is...If they both depend on each other....And I can't get one without the other...How do I get them???

How did you try to install it? Have you tried in add/remove - search for sun java and install from there - if not try synaptic.

I would also install frostwire instead of limewire, it is a .deb which should sort your dependencies when it installs.

Limewire is a deb as well....

And when I search for Sun Java in add remove...and try to install it....it says it conflicts..so it can't...I don't understand.......I tried going to Java and installing it from their website...and the instructions tell me to go to the terminal with a bunch of commands....and it asks for my root password...

What is my root password??...It's not the same as my logon...

I believe that the java site installation advice is for the use of su - try to use sudo instead. Did you try it in synaptic it can work better than add/remove sometimes. Didn't know limewire was a deb tbh - I don't use either ofr torrentsI use deluge or ktorrent.
If you try to run frostwire in aterminal it should, if ther is one, give you some idea of the error.

I reinstalled today and had to redo java - which is a complete pita - never seemed to work properly, but today it did. In a terminal

create a directory - sudo mkdir /usr/java

Using nautilus as root (gksudo nautilus) I navigated to the /usr/java directory and copied the downloaded tarball into it

In a terminal I did these after the file was copied

cd /usr/java
sudo chmod a+x jre-6u6-linux-i586.bin
./chmod a+x jre-6u6-linux-i586.bin

Appeared to work ok for me
