Codecs for Gstreamer

Asked by P0E2005

Ok...I have never used Ubuntu of Linux before...Friend gave me the computer...

I can't play online Videos at all...But when I go to Youtube...I am actuallt prompted to search or Codecs (Not so with other Videos other just will not play)..

When I search for the Codecs...It comes up with Gstreamer...When I Try to Download it...It says it conflicts with other installed software..And to go to synaptic package manager.....I dunno what that is...but I found it...And when I tried to do it that way..it said it couldn't because of "Unresolvable dependencies"...WHAT DO I DO?

And why am I only prompted on youtube?...Is there another reason they won't play everywhere else?..On youtube..they just never load....Anywhere else they just glitch up?????

Try this:
1) Open Synaptic (System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager)
2) Select the package flashplugin-nonfree (you might use the search function to find it)
3) Click apply.

Alternatively:
1) Open a terminal (Applications>Accessories>Terminal)
2) Type the command: sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
3) Enter your password when prompted

There are no search results in the Synaptic manager or "Flashplugin-nonfree"

And the Terminal said: Package flashplugin-nonfree is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package flashplugin-nonfree has no installation candidate

Anything else I can do??

Try enabling the multiverse repositories: go to System>Administration>Software Sources (or something like that) and check the boxes for both multiverse and universe. Then retry the previous instructions.

Try installing the ubuntu-restricted-extras package. It contains a bunch of proprietary codecs. That could be the hold up.

1) Do you have any other sound from other applications? If not:
     a) Check that you don't have some sort of hardware override turned on. (a mute button on your keyboard or somesuch)
     b) in the upper right corner, right click the speaker icon, click open mixer, and put all of the volume controls up to max.
2) If so, try restarting. Otherwise, this is beyond me.
