I tried to put some files from ubuntu c.e. into ubuntu 8.04 and now my synaptic package manager dosn'twork.

When I open the synaptic package manager I get this message.
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
Please help, what should I do?
