Downloading error

Dear Ubuntu Community,
   Recently, I tried to download a program called limewire to my computer. However, there was an error. When tried to open the synaptic manager, I was not not allowed to do so. This is what the error said:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run dpkg--configure-a' to correct the problem.

E: cache->open () failed, please report.

   I have no idea what this means. Again, I cannot get into the synaptic manager.

Hello keith,
Run these commands in a terminal,
Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo aptitude update
