Synaptic blocked after trying to install Wine

Asked by Xavier Farre on 2005-12-06

I tried to install Wine with Synaptic. It failed and now Synaptic is not working.

I tried to do it with the console. Here are the all the error messages (the same as in Synaptic):

---------------------------------------
xavier@Xavi:~$ sudo
usage: sudo -K | -L | -V | -h | -k | -l | -v
usage: sudo [-HPSb] [-p prompt] [-u username|#uid]
            { -e file [...] | -i | -s | <command> }
xavier@Xavi:~$ apt-get update
E: Malformed line 36 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)
xavier@Xavi:~$ apt-get install wine
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the list directory
xavier@Xavi:~$

-----------------------------------------------------

I'm a new Ubuntu user. I don't know if this is a bug or my mistake (probably the latter). Congratulations, it's an excellent Linux distribution.

Best regards,

Xavier Farre

The reason you get the error with 'apt-get install wine' is that you need to use 'sudo apt-get install wine' in order to get root privileges to install. Perhaps you could post your /etc/apt/sources.list.

The 'Permission denied' error is probably because you didn't use sudo in the command (like the previous post said). To resolve the other error, open the sources.list file, it should look something like:

I'm sorry, the links should look like:

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary universe

deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary universe

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-security main restricted

deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-security main restricted

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-security universe

deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-security universe

Formatting got changed when i pasted it.
