Synaptic update fails, new install Ubuntu 11.10
Good afternoon
Back again with another issue. Please refer to question 177584 which explains sort of where I was and what I have done. In Unity interface ran "reload" and got the following message:
Failed to fetch http://
Failed to fetch http://
Failed to fetch http://
Failed to fetch http://
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
As usual am lost and do not know where to go. I do have a program installed " Y PPA" which has an advanced setting that lists a bunch of stuff it can perform, just wondering if I run that, will that correct issues? All of the above are listed as launchpad items and that program is I think tailored to Launchpad.
As always, any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Stewart

The team-xbmc ppa only appears to provide maverick and earlier packages. The tualatrix ppa only is for natty and earlier.

mycae and Eliah,
Again your prompt answers are very much appreciated. I went to my Software Sources and did not see the exact ppa listed in my sources. Below is a complete list of what appears when I open "other software tab":

Again, am still at the beginning of the learning curve with this, but am unsure of which, if any of these I should remove. Do not know if you referred back to question 177584, which I hope kind of outlines my current problems. Also you might refer to question 177211 which is when everything kind of went down the drain.
Again, thanks for your help and suggestions, really have enjoyed working with Ubuntu, and I know somewhere along the line I screwed it up, would really just like to get it unscrewed so that I can work with all the interfaces without any problems.
Look forward to hearing back

"mycae and Eliah, Again your prompt answers are very much appreciated."
I cannot take credit--mycae posted, but all I had done was do categorize this question as being related to the Synaptic Package Manager. However, hopefully this answer will solve your problem...
You have two PPA's enabled that do not provide software for your current release (Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot). You have the XMBC PPA (https:/
Since they are not listed in /etc/apt/
(1) In the Software Center, Edit > Software Sources.
(2) In the Update Manager, click Settings... (a command button at the lower left corner of the window).
(3) Press Alt+F2 and run the command "software-
Remove all entries for those two PPA's. There are likely to be a total of four entries listed.
Alternatively, if you want to remove them more thoroughly, in such a way as to automatically remove all software installed from them (which would probably be a good thing since that software might not work right on your Oneiric system), you can use the ppa-purge command:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo ppa-purge ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
If you use this method (which I recommend), then you should *not* first remove or even disable (uncheck) these PPA's in your Software Sources.

Not sure exactly what I am reading above, except the last 5 entries which seem to indicate that the packages have not been removed. I think that I can still remove as you mentioned in your first option, but again, am not sure if that will work based upon the above output.
Any other thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'd probably just remove them from the Software Sources.
But if you want you can edit them in the Software Sources to specify the codename of the last release in which they provided software, then run "sudo apt-get update", then run the two "sudo ppa-purge ..." commands.
(If you need more detailed help with that, please let me know.)

Hello again Eliah and once again THANKS!!!
You realize that you are dealing with someone who is still working on the baby steps here so just want to make sure that I fully understand :

Do I remove them one at a time or as a group
When I check "Edit" the edit source box apperars with 5 lines

Distribution: oneiric
Components: main
Comment: blank
How do I go about editing and what changes should I make, 4 lines to remove, 4 edit boxes to edit?
If I am to edit and remove one at a time do I run the terminal commands after each time, or just once at the end.
Again, many thanks

You're *either* removing these four entries, *or* editing them. Choose one or the other. If you remove them, you can remove them all at a time and you're done, but you might have some left over software from them lying around on your system. This might cause problems, but probably won't.
If you want to be more thorough, then edit them instead of removing them. If you want to do that, then for the two team-xbmc entries, change "Distribution" from oneiric to maverick, and for the two tualatrix entries, change it from oneiric to natty. Then after doing that, repeat the steps in post #5 (as numbered at https:/

Eliah,
Many many THANKS!!!! Fingers crossed, and until I screw something else up, followed your advice and system appears to be working properly. Have opened and closed in Unity 3D, Gnome, and Gnome Classic. In each case I tried Synaptic and Software Center andUpdate Manager and appeared to have no problems.
Your patience and time are very much appreciated, along with all others who responded to my problems.
Thanks again
