I can not search applications with synaptic package manager because: The index is not update

The index of deposits have not all been uploaded.

The deposit is perhaps no longer available or it is impossible to find due to network problems. An older version of the index will be used if available. Otherwise, the deposit will be ignored. Make sure your network connection is active and make sure the address in the preferences is valid for this deposit.

Intrepid is EOL. It has had zero support since 30th April 2010

You have 3 options:

1) Run a lat full backup and wipe Intrepid out and clean install Lucid, Maverick, Natty or Oneiric (I recommend Oneiric)

This is faster but may take more effort to get reset up. However a LOT has changed since intrepid

2) Use this guide to upgrade VERY slowly using this guide up though each successive release up to your desired release.

This can keep settings but old settings may cause glitches in the new apps. However it alleviates the need to restore userdata, reset up configs etc.
