ntlm proxy authentication required still

Asked by James Colades

I'm new to Linux and recently used Ubuntu. I'm using a proxy server as my internet connection that requires authentication and I've done the solutions that were recommended by some of the questions posted in this site. However, I get the following results in my terminal. Please do help.

james@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get update

In /etc/apt/apt.conf add:

Acquire::http::Proxy "http://username:password@proxyaddress:port";
Acquire::ftp::Proxy "ftp://username:password@proxyproxyaddress:port";

You can also add:

export http_proxy="http://username:password@proxaddress:port"
export ftp_proxy="http://username:password@proxyaddress:port"

in ~/.bashrc

Which may also help

How about installing ntlmaps if it can resolve the issue:

sudo apt-get install ntlmaps

And create a file named:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/apt.conf

and paste the lines of codes below:

Acquire::http::proxy "http://127.0.0.1:3128/";
Acquire::ftp::proxy "ftp://127.0.0.1:3128/";
Acquire::https::proxy "https://127.0.0.1:3128/";

Save and Close and redo the update:

sudo apt-get update

HTH.

i've tried to install but I get this:

james@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install ntlmaps
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package ntlmaps

Thank you for your response.

Package ntlmpas should be available on the universe repository. Typing the command below would show you an output as shown below which would mean that ntlmaps could be readily available for installation.

ianace@Think-Linux ~ $ apt-cache policy ntlmaps
ntlmaps:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 0.9.9.0.1-11.1ubuntu1
  Version table:
     0.9.9.0.1-11.1ubuntu1 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/universe i386 Packages

So installation is automatic with:

sudo apt-get install ntlmaps

If problem still persist, can you do a system update and redo the installation

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ntlmaps

HTH.

To get ntlmaps working, you must to put our domain name, your user and password and parent proxy details into ntlmaps configuration file...

I use, and i suggest you to install, configure and use, cntlm package :

Cntlm is similar to NTLMAPS, but is written in C, so is better than ntlmaps.

I drop here some of /etc/cntlm.conf file here

Username put_your_domain_username_here
Domain put_your_domain_name
Password put_your_domain_user_password_here
#Workstation netbios_hostname # Should be auto-guessed

Proxy 192.168.1.:3128

#
# This is the port number where Cntlm will listen
#
Listen 3128
..
..

Please be sure to restart cntlm service to test

sudo service cntlm restart

Then also be sure the service start at pc boot...

Typo in previous post:

Proxy 192.168.1.:3128

must be something like

Proxy 192.168.1.100:3128

This gave me problems sir. My connection was refused. I have to delete the file i've created using above so as to connect again to another internet connection without any proxy server. Thanks really for the help and all your effort in solving my problem Mr Ian Ace. I'll do again your suggestion once I get home where my connection is through a proxy server.

I will also try marcobra suggestion.

I tried installing ntlmaps using another internet connection without going through a proxy server. I'll try when I get home to my dormitory. Really thank you everyone.
