Ubuntu is not a rolling release distro, there is a regualr package review process and packages are added when and if they are deemed stable.
You may add a 3rd party PPA where somebody has compiled the new version but this cannot be easilty supported as it is an unofficial package version.

If you run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:guido-iodice/abiword-2.8; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade

You should get it in Lucid.

in the site of gnumeric i saw the new version as "stable" so i thought it should be supported.
anyway as i said i'm in karmic, should i run the same command as you suggest? abiword isn't another software?

Yes but it hasn't been tested in Ubuntu yet.

The PPA has a karmic folder so will give you the app (assuming it has been made for Karmic too). This is a 3rd party repo so is in no way guarunteed to give what you expect but its worth a shot if it's massively important.

The version WILL be included in the repos, the devs just haven't got round to adding it yet.
