Go to the repository dialogue to correct the problem.
Hi Guys,
Having some major issues with synaptic package manager and update manager as I cant open up either one without getting error messages.
When I open up synaptic I get the following:
E: Type 'list' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialogue to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
and when I open up update manager I get this:
Could not initialize the package information
An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Type 'list' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/
This all occurred when I went into settings-
as I have been struggling downgrading from 2.04 back to 1.93.
Now I cant update or go into synaptic
cheers for any help
ghost

What is this ddeb repositories ?
I think you can simply delete this file (but you have to be an admin to do it, so simply use a terminal and type "sudo rm /etc/apt/
Try to open Synaptic and see if it's working better
Then maybe you will need to add the repository again.

Francois,
Thankyou thankyou thankyou. You dont know how much time I spent trying to resolve the problem.
Alright I went into terminal and type as per your instruction. I went back into updates and got another error
message. Instead of giving up I simply used what you gave me as a template and then it worked:) It was that
easy.
This problem all started at the fact that I wanted to downgrade transmission 2.04 BACK to 1.93. I did all
manner of things but I cant seem to remove it as the default in synaptic manager. Right now it is no longer
running as I was successful in that regard but I cant seem to install the version that I want. If I go to launchpad for the ppa
I cant get version 1.93 to appear in synaptic to install from. The only version in synaptic that appears is version 2.04.
Do you have any ideas in this regard.
cheers ghost and thanks again

To install version 1.93, different solutions I think:
-if you can find a repository providing it, add it to Synaptic (maybe you already did it). Then in Synaptic, find Transmission, right click, Properties, Versions. You should see both versions there if they are available.
-then you can click on the "Package" menu in synaptic, there is an option to force a version. I can't test that as I dont' have a package with 2 versions, but that should work
-other solution, remove Transmission, download the 1.93 package from a previous version of Ubuntu, and try to install it. That could work. But then, I think you have to go in Synaptic to lock the version, or it will try to update it automatically.

Francois,
I went into terminal and typed the following command:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:transmissio
When I go back into synaptic the only package that appears is 2.04.
When I go to force version the only 2 versions that appear is 2.04 and the latest 2.10.
I am sourcing it from:
https:/
I cant understand what I am doing wrong in this regard.
I mark the existing version for complete removal and they still remain. Have to doing something wrong
but I do feel I am close to resolving this.
Any further help greatly appreciated.
cheers

Ok, just checked, the PPA doesn't provide the 1.93 version for Maverick :) It has this version, but for older versions of Ubuntu...
So what you can do is change the version of Ubuntu used to connect on this PPA. Edit the repository settings, and change "maverick" by "Intrepid". Refresh, try to see if the 1.93 version is availble now.
Just curious, why do you need such an old version ? Maybe your problem can be solved without installing this old version?

I was wondering the same thing. Is it a tracker that hasn't whitelisted 2.0x yet?

Hi Charles and Francois,
Okay the answer to your question is very simple.
The vast amount of downloading that I do is from Pretome which I consider to be
very good site. Transmission is one of the clients that is allowed. However it only allows
for version 1.93 and down. This means that any version above this, that is 2.04 and now 2.10
is NOT allowed. Consequently I am greatly limited in what I can do in terms of downloading.
Those are the rules I guess. They do update the list but this can take time and if you do ask the
admins when this will happen then you get a WARNING which I think is somewhat rough but again
those are the rules. Thats my predicament at the moment
Francois I am learning alot about Ubuntu but I have to confess that I am still a noob so you could you
be a bit more specific please in terms of editing the repository settings. On the surface this may seem simple
enough to someone that knows what they are doing but I guess I just need the instructions to be a little bit
more clearer. I am getting there though.
I am glad that what I was doing was technically right but you guys have clearly identified that the PPA does
not provide for older versions. I wonder why this is the case when alot of people like to try out updated versions
to see what it is like and if need be would like the option of downgrading which in this case is proving to be hard for
me at least.
cheers for all your help guys. Muchly appreciated
ozzie

No problem, don't hesitate to ask if you don't know what I'm talking about.
To edit the repositories, run Synaptic, then in the menus, "Settings", "Repositories"
Tab "Other software"
You should have the PPA, edit it.
Check for the "distribution" field. It's probably maverick. You can replace it with "intrepid". It will then use the packages for Intrepid.
Worth a try. But it could install some dependencies messing with other softwares, I don't guarantee it's safe. You will know it asap you will try to force the version I think, it should tell you if some other packages need to be changed.

Hi Francois
Okay I followed the instructions and played around with not only Intrepid but other previous releases.
The result was that it could not download all the repository indexes.
Okay I went back to see if I could install the latest version as a trial to see if everything was working and
as you suggested there may be an issue with some dependencies.
I went back and edited the PPA back to Maverick. Upon trying to install I get the following message
Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade
The following packages have unresolved dependancies. Make sure that all required dependencies
are added and enabled in the preferences.
transmission:
Depends: transmission-gtk but it is not going to be installed
Depends: transmission-
Okay scratch the above I persisted and went back in and simply edited and okayed but it definately
does not want to download all the indexes. Am happy that I pulled myself out of this little mess so thats
good. I even as far back as Hardy. Definately a pain in the butt for those wanting previous releases.
Cheers for any further advice.

Francois,
I have been able to locate an archive for transmission:
http://
Given the lack of success going through synaptic, is it actually possible to download and then
install in the same way as you would with windows. Are there actually exe files there to work with?
cheers ozzie

That would be very complicated to install it from there.
Just to explain you a bit:
-to install a software on Ubuntu, you need .deb files. It's more or less the equivalent of the .exe installer on Windows
-you can also find some installers for other distributions (let's consider them as different systems and not really compatible, each distribution made its own choice on how to organize everythong), like .rpm for instance. You can sometimes "convert" them to use on Ubuntu, but that's only when no other choice.
-finally, you can often find the source code. But then you have to compile the software to make it runnable... It's often complicated. Those files are often available for developers more than users.
This last option is what you found.
I think there should be an easier way:
https:/
You can try:
-remove transmission from your computer
-download transmission and its dependencies from this website
The main difficulty here is that in Linux, most softwares share elements with each other. This way, the system is 2.5GB and not 10GB, most common functions are not duplicated in plenty of libraries. But then if you want an older version of the software, this software may require older version of librairies, and if there are too many of them, you are in trouble, it's a cascade.
Apparently you need:
transmission
transmission-cli
transmission-common
transmission-gtk
Remove them from your current Ubuntu using Synaptic. Then download all the deb, and install them by double clicking on them, starting from the last one (otherwise I think that if you try the first one, it will look for dependencies in the repository, and it will fail).
If you succeed, I think you will have to lock the version in Synaptic.

ghostaman:
I have two problems similar to the one Francois struggled with.
First, I run ubuntu 10.04 but I think the machine has upgraded itself to 10.10. I cannot get into my repositories in the Synaptic package Manager. Secondly, Update Manager comes up and then disappears three seconds! later. The only way I can make changes to my repositories is as follows:
Thirdly, how do you install an ISO file? iBeing a newbie, I still have not download and install files from the Internet or a CD ROM---Would you please help me in this?!?!

Synaptic Package Manager and Update Manager are still acting their old same way The problem did not occur
until the operating system updated itself to Maverick 10.10. This same problem has caused me to erase and -install
the operating system on five or six occasions last year and this year both.
So, is there a bug in the system, or faulty application of doctrine on my part?
Please keep me posted
