How to start KDE desktop so login screen sees it

KDE desktop is not available on the login screen. I'm not sure what's installed. How do I get it running from lucid?

it was there on my 9.10 system but not on 10.4. I see that this has been answered here and there. Let me fight it unless the reply is easy.

If it's not installed, you can install KDE by opening a terminal and typing:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
