An error occurred in Synaptic

On opening SYnaptic Pac Man this message appears and nothing is working.E: Malformed line 48 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

can you give the output of:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list | head -n 48 | tail -n 1

thats why then. If you run:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

You will see NO other lines have the quote. Remove the character and save the new file. After closing gedit run:

sudo apt-get update

It should now be smooth.

Now u have lost me-must i paste- gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list-in the terminal?

Yes

Press CTRL+ALT+T
paste: gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Press enter

The file wil open and be edittable
