Synaptic fails to update fully
I have a fresh install of 10.04 with studio on my desktop. When I press Reload on Synaptic Package Manager, it seems to hang a while after downloading half the files and then finishes. When I canceled the reload during the hang I end up with a notice telling me synaptic wasn't able to contact some of the sites and older versions of the files being fetch will be installed instead. below is a copy of the files not able to be fetched.

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
How am I able to fix this?

Maybe the mirror had problems. Try again please.
Do you connect per proxy to the internet?

I connect through a hard wired internet gateway router. I tried synaptic again and it came up with a window saying:
Could not download all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Have you tried a different server under software sources as was suggested earlier? You seem to have ignored the advice and use the au server which you have shown to be (possibly) having issues.
Use software sources under system -> administration and change server to the US or UK server then retry your command.

Hi
When you open the Software Sources
System - Administration - "Software Sources"
or
System - Administration - "Synaptic Package Manager" - Settings - Repositories
Can you temporarily untick all the options except perhaps
1. On the 1st tab "Ubuntu Software" or "Main" or something, keep the one ending in "(main)"
2. On the 2nd tab either "Third Party Software" or "Other Software" untick all the options there.
3. On the 3rd tab "updates" or something keep only "Important Security updates"
4. On the 4th tab "Authentication" please let us know how many "Trusted Software Providers" are listed. I have 3, hopefully you have at least 1?
Then the "reload" in the package manager should hopefully restrict your machine right down to the basics and they should all work (although i have a feeling that even with this there might be some error messages)
After doing that it might be worth seeing if the updates go through with no problems? Please let us know. Also please could you let us know how much free space you have left on your hard-drive, just in case that's an issue.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I've restricted the Software Sources as suggested and I have 3 trusted software providers as listed below:
437D05B5 2004-09-12
Uvuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <email address hidden>
FFB75451 2004-12-30
Ubuntu CD Image Automatic Signing Key <email address hidden>

Launchpad PPA for Paolo Rampino
B219D801 2007-11-10
Paolo Rampino (akirad) <email address hidden>
The amount of failures has reduced down as listed below:
Failed to fetch http://
Failed to fetch http://
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
My computer is telling me I have 55Gb of free space on my harddrive.

Hi :)
Ok, so we are getting there but it is a little worrying about the remaining ones that are troublesome. Please can you work through the medibuntu worksheet to see if those repositories get added back in successfully this time
https:/
This should also sort one of the gpg-keys you need. I have a feeling the problem is something to do with gpg-keys so this would be a good test to see if the medibuntu repos work for your machine or not.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi again
From the "Trusted Software Providers" list it looks as though you have tried an experimental movie editing package
https:/
http://
Which might be glitching somehow. Can you re-install this and re-establish the repositories for that project? either that or remove it? However, notice that the cinecutie repos are not listed as causing problems so i think this is really not a problem.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Lets try Marcobra's usual fix:
Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type or better copy and paste:
sudo rm /var/lib/
press enter, if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter
Then copy and paste the row below time into terminal, and after paste the row press enter.
sudo dpkg --configure -a
then to update and upgrade and also check pending or missing packages, still using terminal type:
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
Hope this helps

Hi :)
This is definitely all wrong and extremely unusual. Luckily this is a fresh install of Ubuntu isn't it? Is there much data to protect? I would md5sum check the installer Cd and if it passes just do a fresh total re-install.
https:/
If you do have data, files and stuff to protect then please give us the output of
sudo fdisk -l
where "-l" is a lower-case "-L" and sudo will ask for your normal password but wont give you stars as you type.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks greg, I thought about your suggestion running studio 9.10 and 10.04 side by side but at the moment I'm right at the end of my download, which has been borrowed from a family member, and I'm really not sure how to do it.
Thanks Tom, Yes! this is a fresh install, I checked the integrity of the installer .iso (md5sum) all was good. I used a usb memory stick to do the original install and have spent a heap of time in downloading programs and customising my desktop, it would really pain me to have to start all over again, not to mention how little download I have left.
The output of sudo fdisk -l is below:

Hi
I am not sure if there is a way to save downloaded programs & updates off the drive but i have a feeling there is a way so lets hold off on the reinstall for now. Since the Cd checked out fine it is not the problem i thought anyway so a reinstall probably wouldn't help.
The fdisk command also showed us that the install has plenty of space so again that is not a problem, which is not a great surprise because of your earlier comments.
Hopefully someone else will have a better plan
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
