Auto-select "-dbg" packages in Synaptic

Asked by Steven Sroka

Is there any way to get Synpatic to auto-select all relevant -dbg packages when installing a program or after a program has been installed, such as Yast2 does in openSUSE?

I'd like to add some worthwhile log and error files when I report bugs on Launchpad or to package maintainers but Apport and most developers need more information then just "my program crashed!" I'd like to supply the information Apport generates when debugging symbols are installed.

hi steve i believe ubuntu does this if your talking about checking the dependencies in yast . the lib/libraries or data files needed should be included.

if you want to send info on a crash i believe you need the debug file that should be listed just under the program.

if your talking about something else then im sorry im mistaken .i know the suse seems to be alot further along but with the

shared open source libraries i have had similar problems with both distros. the one thing that seems better for sure is adding

packman to the suse repository. also was really impressed by there new install 11.2 live cd recognized i was left handed and

adjusted acordingly with a nice giu prompt. sad to say when updated the s.hared o.pen s.ource left me mad as hell because just

like in ubuntu the x-library has taken over that function leaving me stuck with a hack that changes the setting back and

disables my mouse pad(touch click) on my laptop . hope you get it straightened out. at this point in the game its really starting

to make me wonder why i left windows.

Actually I meant I need to easily install the debug packages associated with the main programs a user can have installed on Ubuntu.

A debug file can be exist and it may not if something happens when I'm using a program, but even if it does, it might be useless since a proper backtrace of the crashed process cannot be obtained. Since debug packages can help with backtraces I'd like to install and -dbg packages that are related to my installed packages. Manually I can't because that would take FOREVER! I have thousands of packages installed, even a clean install of Ubuntu has thousands of packages installed by default.

hi again steve i understand what you mean there are around 1200 ubuntu dbg files alone . if you want a specific file

system>administrator>synaptic package>(setting in sections) > libraries-development contains files for packages or programs

and others ... hope that helps. thats the quikest i can think of unless you want to use the terminal under applications>acessories

sudo apt-get install (put your list here) rather than checking each individual program you can have the all processed there

Can you help with this problem?
