Need help upgrading from Hardy Heron

Asked by fresnobob

I managed to take a Dell Inspiron 1420 running Feisty and upgrade it to 8.04 (Hardy Heron). Since the latest stable release, I'm told, is 9.10, I thought I'd upgrade to that.

Based on the articles I've read online, it would appear that I first must upgrade to 9.04, correct?

If so, I'm having trouble following the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/JauntyUpgrades

It says the update notifier should notify me of the availability of 9.04, but it doesn't. Furthermore, when I select System > Administration > Update manager, I'm not prompted to install 9.04, either.

The page also has instructions about using something called Adept Manager, which I've never heard of.

I'm brand new to Linux. Can someone please help?

If your (Hardy)system runs perfect there is no need to upgrade.
Hardy is still suported.
Hardy is an LTS and the next LTS will be Lucid 10.04, which will be released in a few weeks.
You can upgrade from one LTS to the next.

btw. after Hardy was Intrepid 8.10, not Jaunty 9.04.

The risk that something may go wrong by upgrading over three versions isn't small.
Since Karmic incl. major changes it may make sense to proceed a new installation and upgrade then to Lucid, in case you desperatly wish to have the latest release.

Thanks for the answer, Sam.

Are you saying I should upgrade to Intrepid and *then* upgrade to Lucid when it's available in a few weeks, or are you suggesting I just wait a few weeks and, once Lucid is available, upgrade to that? If you're suggesting I upgrade to Intrepid, is there a page that instructs me how?

Referring to given answer, nothing to add, except personal preference, new installation, since it's a self dependent decision.

Quote of link 'Upgrade Notes':
To avoid damaging your system, upgrading should only be done from one release to the next release (e.g. Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 9.10) or from one LTS release to the next (e.g. Ubuntu 6.06LTS to Ubuntu 8.04LTS). If you wish to 'skip' a version, you can backup your data and do a fresh installation, or progressively upgrade to each successive version. For example, to upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.10, first upgrade to 9.04, then upgrade 9.04 to 9.10.

Same link includes e.g. upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10
