Could not download all repository indexes

Asked by fresnobob

I just dusted off an three-year-old Dell Inspiron 1420 running Ubuntu, and I can't get it to update. Instead, I get the error message "Could not download all repository indexes."

Based on searches, it appears I may have to update to a newer version of Ubuntu. My concern is that by doing that, I will no longer have the drivers that Dell shipped with this laptop. Does anyone know if that's correct?

If there's any way I can simply change the /etc/apt/sources.list file so I can update, that would be great. Does anyone know? Just in case, I'm posting the contents of that file below

From Ubottu the bot in #ubuntu on FreeNode IRC

!7.04
Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) was the sixth release of Ubuntu. End Of Life: October 19th, 2008. See !eol and !upgrade for more details.

!eol
End-Of-Life is the time when security updates for an Ubuntu release stop, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for more information. Looking to upgrade from an EOL release? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades

!upgrade
For upgrading, see the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes - see also http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

I have no idea regarding the drivers that Dell shipped with the unit, but if I was to guess, updating should be fine.

   Best of Luck,
   George

Thanks for the reply, George.

The first link you provided says updates should only be done from one release to the next release. Since my laptop is running Ubuntu 7.04, it appears I need to upgrade to 7.10, then to 8.04, then to 9.04 and then, finally to 9.10. Can someone here please confirm that my understanding is correct?

I'd hate to do all that work and then find out I was wrong.

OK, I went ahead and tried installing 7.10 and appear to have gotten most of the way there.

But after I reboot, the Ubuntu logo shows up briefly, and then I lose the graphical user interface and get regular text. It says:

Starting up ...
Loading, please wait...
kinit: name_to_dev_t(/dev/disk/by-uuid/[additional text deleted]

it shows Ubuntu 7.10 dell tty1

It then prompts me for login and password. It accepted them, but there's no GUI at all.

Any clue what's going on and how I fix this?

fresnobob,

You seem to have run into some pretty major road bumps on you first of four updates (to get to Karmic 9.10).

As an alternative, perhaps downloading a Karmic 9.10 ISO and trying it in LiveCD mode to verify that all hardware works correctly. Then backing up your personal files from you current install only some other media and performing a fresh Karmic install then replacing your files would be an easier route?

I'm sorry but I don't have an answer for your uuid error, perhaps someone else does? But the title of question no longer reflects the issue that you are having (and I am lead to believe changing titles is discouraged), perhaps a new question specifying your upgrade error is in order?

Best of luck,
George
