Synaptic error.. (Duplicate of question #8217)

Asked by Cathy

I have been following Question #8217 in synaptic in ubuntu and posted and then realized I should have posted for myself. So please don't get upset but maybe you can help. I have copied and pasted Below.

Another Newbie here maybe you can help me: as you see I typed in:
 gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and my results will follow. But above you posted this and I am so new to this I cannot figure the steps.
and edit the lines as you directed:

I also think I might not have everything installed in Ubuntu 7.04
When I go to Repository I get errors related to medibunt as well as in the Add/Remove Applications.

When I go Third Party software there are always the following, the first three have a check mark but not the source code.

http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu feisty-commercial main
http://packages.medibuntu.org/feisty free non-free
http://packages.medibuntu.org/feisty free non-free ( yes I realize it is a repeat but that shows in the Repository)
This one isn't checked off: http://packages.medibunty.org/ feisty free non-free (Source code)

I just tried to go into Synaptic and see the error below. HELP HELP!

E: Type 'deb-sr' is not known on line 5 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Cathy,

can you post YOUR sources.list file only?

At the beginning of the first file, there is a line that starts with:

deb-sr c

See the space between sr and c? If that is your file, you have to delete this space, the line must read:

deb-src

yes thats right its deb-src and not deb-sr c it will not be recognised by synaptic.. as its not a repository format in synaptic and as far as your problem goes... please paste output of sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.

I really don't understand what to do. when I type sudo nano/etc/apt/sources.list

I get the following messgae
 pete@pete-desktop:~$ sudo nano/etc/apt/sources.list
sudo: nano/etc/apt/sources.list: command not found

Please can you give me some simple directions. I have tried to find a book on this program which maybe could give me some simple directions but so far no luck.

Just be careful when you type commands. In between nano and /etc/apt/sources.list there should be at least a space.
The error message is usually giving you some clues about what went wrong. In your case it is telling you a command was not found, and that because it is looking for the command:

nano/etc/apt/sources.list

(note no spaces anywhere).

Which doesn't exists.
The right command is nano and the subject of the command is /etc/apt/sources.list.
If you need help on command's synopsis you can use the man command.
For instance in this case:

man nano

Will tell you what the command nano is, how it can be invoked, and what options and arguments it will take.

bash: nano/etc/apt/sources.list: No such file or directory
pete@pete-desktop:~$

when I type this man nano this what I get
NANO(1) NANO(1)

NAME
nano - Nano’s ANOther editor, an enhanced free Pico clone

SYNOPSIS
       nano [OPTIONS] [[+LINE,COLUMN] FILE]...

DESCRIPTION
This manual page briefly documents the nano command.

nano is a small, free and friendly editor which aims to replace Pico,
the default editor included in the non-free Pine package. Rather than
just copying Pico’s look and feel, nano also implements some missing
(or disabled by default) features in Pico, such as "search and replace"
and "go to line and column number".

OPTIONS
       +LINE,COLUMN
Places cursor at line number LINE and column number COLUMN (at
least one of which must be specified) on startup, instead of the
default of line 1, column 1.

 Manual page nano(1) line 1

Hope this gives you an idea what I should do next.
