Have you tried renaming the supertux folder to see if the settings are bad?

You can also run the game from terminal and use the output to help diagnose.

Do other games work ok?

Hi Actionparsnip

apologies for the delay in replying, but life happened ;-)

Ran supertux from terminal and got this output
Datadir: /usr/share/games/supertux
Warning: Unable to open the file "/home/tanya/.supertux/config" for read!!!
Warning: No joysticks are available.
Segmentation fault

The other games I've got installed are Wormux, SuperKart, Shuffelpuck and Secret Maryo Chronicles (or something similar), all these work fine.

Theres a command, I think its strace which can help diagnose seg faults. Maybe you could add a PPA to get a newer build of supertux

Thank you all for the help.
But I wasn't gonna spend hours on this problem as it's only for my 3yr old to play games with.
I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 and problem was solved.
