java confusion

Asked by Richard A Bevis

Do I have two javas? Do I need both? Applications > Internet shows "OpenJDK Java 6 Web Start" and "Sun Java 6 Web Start." Furthermore, System > Preferences shows "OpenJDK Java 6 Policy Tool" and "Sun Java 6 Policy Tool" as well as "Sun Java 6 Plugin Control Panel." Do I need all this coffee in my system? I'm starting to feel a little spazzed out. Is there an "OpenJDK Java 6 Plugin Control Panel?" Can I get rid of the "Sun Java" stuff? I'm trying to keep my computer as uncluttered with nonfreeware as possible. Which packages can I uninstall? As always, any help is enormously appreciated! R

Search for sun java and remove it. Yes you can remove it, you dont need both. Open jdk does the same job as sun jdk.

Hope that helps

Thanks Shane. I removed "sun-java6-bin" and "sun-java6-jre", but "sun-java6-plugin" was automatically included. Isn't the last one my Firefox plugin and don't I need it? Is there an "openjdk-java6-plugin?" Typing that shows nothing in Synaptic. There is however an "icedtea6-plugin" (a web browser plugin based on openjdk...to execute java applets), should I install that instead? Thanks. Richard
