Installing Java on Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by Karunesh Johri

What is the correct way to install Java SE with firefox plugin on AMD64 Turion based laptop? I have tried two methods (i) Downloading from www.java.com and (ii) using a script to load 32 bit firefox and plugins. But in both cases applets do not work in firefox. Also, "Do I have Java" test is not passed at www.java.com. Thanks.

The below command installs flash , it will also install java, truetype fonts etc. I believe. Make sure firefox is closed when you do this....

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Thanks. I tried this. The packages get downloaded and get installed. The command ends with,

Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

However when I run firefox and try to load a web page having applets, the applets do not run.

The problem is not solved, but I have used this workaround,

(i) Install 32-bit Ubuntu 8.10,

(ii) Install Java (Linux 32 bit version) from www.java.com,

(iii) After intstall of Java,

    (a) put $JAVA_HOME/bin directory in PATH,
    (b) Link the /usr/java/jre1.6.0/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.

Even though I am using firefox, the linking has to be done in mozilla/plugins.
