sun-java6-jre java: command not found

Asked by Elias K Gardner

Binary package hint: sun-java6-jre

This is on 64 bit hardy. I have sun-java6-jre installed. I can run java programs through the gui but not in a cli. The java command returns this error. "bash: java: command not found"

Do i misunderstand something? is java the wrong command? Is it not supposed to work this way?

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. Thanks for the question.

Have you followed the procedure to select the java version in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java#head-fef9352fb26820bb774df978180c9dd3a60e777b

I hope this helps.
