dependency error: Java 6

Asked by sandra.bodkin

Hi everyone!
I just installed Ubuntu 10.4 and when I tried downloading Frostwire the error message came up saying the dependencies were not satisfiable and it gave me a list of what I suppose are dependencies. The list had Java 6 etc.
What do I have to do to install this package? I am really new to Ubuntu and so far it looks pretty good. Of course, I know almost nothing about it, so if anyone can explain in detail, I will appreciate it. Thanks to all.
I've already tried to look under the Package manager in WWW, www mult and www universal and the Sun Package is not there?

Hi,

I just read your question as it appeared on my e-mail.

To install jre-5 and jre-6

1. Go to repositories and enable your multiverse repository
2. If it asks to reload, then reload and it will update
3. Go to Synaptic Manager and choose WWW as before
4. Reload all to update
5. Find jre-5 and jre-6
6...Choose these two and click on the boxes(they should be checked)
7. When you are finished choosing what you want to install, click ok and they should be installed.

The reason you didn't see them the first time was because your repository (Multiverse) was not enabled.
This should then allow you to install Frostwire.

To install Sun Java 5 & 6, open System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager. Search for "sun-java" and you will get a list of available packages. You need sun-java5-bin, sun-java5-jre, sun-java6-bin, sun-java6-jre.

An alternate method to install these is to open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and run the following command:
sudo apt-get install sun-java5-bin sun-java5-jre sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre

When it asks you for your password, there will be no feedback. Just type it in and hit Enter, and it should download and install the Java packages needed. From then on you can try installing Limewire again.

Hope you enjoy using Ubuntu!

Thank you Jacob! I had already checked the synaptic manager but didn't know what to look for. I tried downloading it and realized I didn't have to. I think I didn't choose the right packages, so I'll try this again. Thanks. I am sure this solved the problem.

To Jacob: I went into synaptic Manager and tried installing the two packages but it tells me they are not installable. So I tried the other method, Terminal and typed in the sudo apt line completely, and the answer was E: broken packages not installable. Since the packages are included, they should be installable, however, something seems to be missing. Maybe it needs an update?

Try this:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --fux-missing

I tried that command and the terminal answers: command not found. What does sudo and apt mean? I don't understand the abbreviations yet. Thanks. There must be something else I didn't do.

sudo - give you root privilegies
apt - terminal based program for installing software

Command not found is my mistake - correctly is the command "sudo apt-get install -f"

I followed all of these steps and the last thing my computer said was:

"Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded."

after that i tried to restart my computer and download lime wire again but i still got the same message:

" Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: sun-java6-jre..."

To Kelly:
I found the dependencies under Synaptic: World Wide Web (multiverse),
Look for :
Sun-java-5-plugin
Sun-java-6-plugin
and Mark for installation (both of these) and install both. This will also install the sun java runtime environment as well.
Re-install limewire
When it asks you where you want to save your files change this to: home/yourname/limewire/saved
Then it should work. I have it installed and have no problems with it. If you need more help, just get back to me.

Kelly, what version of Ubuntu are you using? If you are using Ubuntu 7.10 you should have World Wide Web (multiverse).
Also, go to System Menu on your taskbar and find Software Sources. When you have found this, you will see 5 tabs. Choose Ubuntu Software and check the 4 first boxes. This will enable downloads.
Next, choose the tab that says Updates and enable (check) all the updates.
Now, go back to synaptic Package Manager and click the Reload button. Scroll down to the bottom of the window on the right side and carefully check to see if you have World Wide Web
World Wide Web (multiverse)
World Wide Web (universe)
It should be there because it comes with the live installation CD for Ubuntu 7.10.
Let me know what you have found.

Hi Kelly! Now that you have found it all you have to do is install both sun java 5 and 6 plugins and limewire should then work. Re-read the instructions I gave you and if I can be of anymore help let me know. It's late here (Montreal) so I am going to bed now. If I know the answer, i will be happy to help. Take care.
