After short time root (user as sudo) can not execute commands.

Asked by Christian Tilche

Setup:
Laptop Probook 5320m
Linux 11.10 oneiric

Since 1 day, (updated system yesterday and today again) when I login and use in a terminal "sudo -i" to switch to root rights it works fine.

After a while I can type commands in such a terminal but no command comes back to prompt. everthing hangs.
- I can not open further terminals
- I can access network devcies or browse
- Shutdown and restart hangs
- I have to hard reset the laptop

I opened the log with "dmesg" and got these output...

It seems that after disabling all wifi settings I do not have this issue anymore.

But I really need the wifi netwok.

The sudo password in a single terminal session has a time limit on it. That is why you can use sudo many times in a terminal and you only get asked for your password once, but after a configurable period of time this will expire and you will be asked to enter the password again.

I suspect what is happening is that the sudo password is expiring and this affect the environment of the shell you are running in - it still _thinks_ it's root but no longer has the access rights. I don't know why it would affecting Network Manager but it's probably a side affect caused by the way you are adopting root privileges while using half the environment of your normal user login.

Note that this is by design - sudo will let you do what you need to do with admin rights, but won't jeopardize the security of the system by always being logged in as root. There's really no good reason why you would want to be logged in as root _all_ of the time, especially when attached to the internet. What are you trying to do?

Hi and Thx to all that answered.

1) the notebook is fine, and becasue I can not see it when I do not use the wifi in the network manager applet, I suggest it is NOT a ram HW issue.

2) well I did not gave my account special rights and just need the sudo, which from my point of view NEVER ever timeout before, to check the network address and routes.

At least it was working fine the last days, and I do not only have these issue because I use a shell with sudo rights.
In fact, I can even keep all terminals closed and use the network manager to connect automaticly to a Wifi ssid and I will see a lost of DNS resolv in the browsers and email programm after a short while.

I think only become aware of some issues with the rights , just because I am using the terminal with root rights.

I guess the issue is related to the network manager and it is causing system wide issues with all rights realted access.

Cheers,
Christian
