Need password to install printer

Asked by Gigi Calvit-Hedelsky

I am a new Ubuntu user and not a computer expert.
While loving the system, I am having problems installing my printer. As a small business owner having an operational printer is a must.

1. I have a Lexmarx Pro205 compatible with Linux (so the specifications say)
2. Downloaded the appropriate driver.
3. At the end of the process was prompt for my password. Entered my password and it rejected it. Tried several times with
    same results.
4. Changed my administrative password multiple times with same results.
5. In the forums, I read that I need a different password (root?) but have no idea what that would be or how to obtain it.
6. Similar answers to the problem seem more complicated than what I can handle or my knowledge of computer systems.

I didn't expect that installing a printer was going to be so troublesome, instead I expect a process that any person with a reasonable understanding of computers should have been able to perform and not only a computer specialist (which I have already contacted).
I am in love with Ubuntu but maybe Ubuntu is not designed for me.

Please let me know if there is any friendlier way to perform this task or I may have to go back to my old hated windows.

Sincerely Gigi

Hello,

When you install anything new in Ubuntu it asks for your login password. This is one of the reasons that Ubuntu is safe.

Are you aware that you can install Printer Packages from the Synaptic Package Manager. Go to System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager and search for your printer.

With Ubuntu many actions have to be carried out as Root and this requires the command terminal and sudo.

Regards,

Allan :)

Allan,
my login password doesn't work for this installation. Safety is great but
again, I wasn't expecting installing a simple printer to be a high security
issue for the system.
Will try the printer package you suggested and see; about the command
terminal and sudo I am lost..and still without printer.
O well...

Thanks,
Gg
