If you boot to root recovery mode you can set your password there. Karmic is no longer supported in any way so I suggest you upgrade to at least Lucid.

Thanks for this - sorry if a bit ignorant, I am an new ubuntu user from Mac OS. How do I boot to recovery mode? When I switch on it just goes to the login request. Thanks, Rob

Hold shift at boot and you can select recovery mode, then select root. You can now run:

passwd foo

replace foo with yourusername. Eg:

passwd andy

You can now reset the password (You will get ZERO feedback but keep typing). To reboot, run:

reboot

Log in as normal.

Again, Karmic has no updates as all the Canonical repos for Karmic have been removed. It is in no way supported.

Can you help with this problem?
