dont have a password, installed by vendor with error indicating PW installed but not provided

You can boot to root recovery mode (hold shift at boot, select recovery mode then select root), you can now run:
passwd foo

replace foo with your username. E.g.
passwd andy

You can now run:
reboot

To reboot and login with your new password, you now have a password to run stuff with sudo and gksudo and can be used to run the command you need (prepend the command with sudo)
