Boot to root recovery mode and run:
passwd foo

replace foo with your username. E.g.
passwd andy

And then reboot with:
reboot

You can now log in as foo with your new password.

FYI. Hardy desktop support ends when Natty is released on 28th April 2011, so I suggest you clean install at least Lucid if you want continued support

At the GRUB boot loader choose recovery mode. (You might have hold down Shift to while booting to get there.)
When a menu open choose the option to go to the shell.
On the shell type:
passwd <username>
(replace <username> with you username)
If you don't you user name run:
getent passwd

Can you help with this problem?
