password for root

hi
i have ubuntu 10.10
i installed by my self. and one day the sound have error i dont have sound at all.
i tray some cod but?
the ubuntu asked me for password root in any thing in update manger, software centre and to go to D drive.
i can enter to system with my password i am the administer but i dont know or have root password.

"By default, the Root account password is locked in Ubuntu. This means that you cannot login as Root directly or use the su command to become the Root user. However, since the Root account physically exists it is still possible to run programs with root-level privileges.
