Root password

Asked by AndrewB

hi i am trying to install some drivers n browser softwares but while installing it is asking for some admin password please help me regarding this.....

I had this issue on 2 installs of Maverick.
Newbie but it seems the root pw is not set and blank pws are not allowed.
So doing sudo passwd at the terminal seems to do the trick. You can use the same pw.
A bug if not a bugbear to fool newbies?

Ubuntu doesn't use the password on the root user; in general Ubuntu will ask for your users password when switching to root (using sudo).

You don't say which software you are trying to install; I've converted this to a question so that you can ask for how to install it on Ubuntu.

Well, if you do a clean install of maverick and then try to install a (Lexmark) printer driver, you will find this problem.
The authentication will return invalid until you do the sudo bit.
So if there isn't a root pw then there is a disconnect between the normal user pw and the pw for root authentication. (My terminology may be slightly wrong as I'm 48 hrs into Ubuntu).
The "sudo" pw I input was different to the login pw and both worked in their context.
Either way it is a bug(bear) but I have given you the solution above.

To clarify: problem solved. Regret confusion by copying first part of Question #96255.
My intention was to post an answer for Question #96255 and to flag an issue.
Thanks for response.
