how do I use my encrypted passphrase to retrive my admin password?

I cannot access my admin account, because the password was encrypted with a passphrase upon installation.
With the new build that was autoinstalled #32 I am not able to access root as you probably already know. I have tried the Terminal but not being a whiz bang at the command line came up with nothing. I have combed my Ubuntu Linux Bible for 10.04 as well as the Ubuntu Pocket Guide. I have used just about every resource I can think of.
