you should use "sudo -s" to get root permissions or "sudo application" using your actual password

you can find further information at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

Are you trying to install new applications via the Synaptic Package Manager? If so, make certain it is prompting for the root password. When I use that tool on my system it prompts me for my regular account password. Of course my regular account has administrative priviledges. That may be the case for you as well.

Another course of action might be to use "sudo apt-get" at the command line. The apt-get command allows you to install packages from the command line. See "man apt-get". When you run the Synaptic Package Manager or most any other graphical package installer on an Ubuntu system apt-get is the tool that is doing the work behind the graphical front-end.

You can reset the root password by running

sudo passwd

why you are being asked for the root password is unclear -- you should be asked for your password for admin permissions. I assume you have tried your password?

Can you help with this problem?
