Where do I find good documentation on strace

I am trying to figure out why J-Pilot is not connecting. (The developer does not respond and the documentation gives little guidance on failure.) I dug up something called "strace". I got it to work and it seems promising. I need to find some documentation on the strace parameters that are less cryptic than found in "man strace". I also need to figure out how to interpret the output. I am new to Ubuntu-Linux but old to many other OSes.
