Ubuntu 10.4 & Startupmanager problem??

Asked by sadsack

Hi there,

I Have managed to install Startupmanager, and chose Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition as my default op system, I have changed my timeout to 16 secs, Color depth to 16 bit, and to "Show boot splash".

But every time i reboot XP Home is always the last one listed still.

But when i re-run Startupmanager all of my settings are still there.... XP Home as default, timeout 16 secs, ect ect...

Is there a particular reason for this, I.E. Startupmanager just doesn't work with grub2 on 10.4, or is there something else I should be doing in order for these changed to take effect.

Thank you for any help given, it will be very much appreciated for a 2 day noob linux user.

It doesn't meter on witch position your desired OS is on grub.If it is highlighted when grub opens then it is default.

In That case then Ubuntu is still the default. because xp home is not highlighted in any way, only the 1st on the list is highlighted.

I Managed to find this info from here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2

So it seems the only editor available to edit this basic text file is StartupManager.
Considering what the next two lines say.

Configuration changes are normally made to /etc/default/grub and to the custom files located in /etc/grub.d. The /boot/grub/grub.cfg file should not be edited by the user; changes to this file are made by configuration scripts.

info.png Some of the most common changes, such as the default OS/kernel and menu timeout, can be changed from within a GUI app called StartUp-Manager. See the community doc StartUpManager for information about how to install and use this application.

/etc/default/grub (file)

    * The main configuration file for changing default settings. Upon installation, the following lines are available for alteration by the user:
    *

GRUB_DEFAULT - Sets the default menu entry. Entries may be numeric, a complete menuentry quotation, or "saved"
          o

GRUB_DEFAULT=0 Sets the default menu entry by menu position. As in GRUB, the first "menuentry" in grub.cfg is 0, the second is 1, etc.
          o

GRUB_DEFAULT="xxxx" An exact menu entry, including the quotation symbols, may also be used. In this case, location in the menu will not matter. Example: GRUB_DEFAULT="Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-9-generic"
