How do I reset the password on the keyring file?

Asked by Alex Cockell on 2008-05-20

I am running a preinstalled Lenovo THinkpad R61i with Ubuntu 8.04 installed already. As part of the welcome pack, i was supplied the first login ID and hey suggested I change the password on it - which I did.

I now find myself having to remember that old password in order to connect to Wifi - something to do with a file "default.kyr".

How do I reset the password on this file to bring it in line with my new login password?

On Hardy (8.04 LTS, which you're using), System->Preferences->Encryption and Keyrings
You will see a list of keyrings. On my system and probably on yours, there is only one keyring. If there is more than one, it's probably the one called "login"
Click the keyring whose password you want to change and then click the "Change Unlock Password" button.

If there's more than one, it pays to change them all, assuming your password is strong enough (a passphrase works well here). Otherwise, it may be more secure to give different keyrings different passwords.

Thanks for that - was switching back and forth between prefs and helpfiles this morning... boot this evening nailed it.
