Ubuntu 16.04.1 still at sshguard 1.6.0?

Asked by Lester Ingber

Hi. I just upgraded my VPS running Ubuntu LTS from 14.04.4 to 16.04.1.

I see that the latest Ubuntu just offers an older version of sshguard 1.6.0, whereas the current version at https://sourceforge.net/projects/sshguard/files/ is 1.6.4.

Since this is an important security software, please try to update sshguard more frequently.

I first had written to the developers. I got a reply:

"Kevin Zheng
You should contact the package maintainer directly. Point out that we have a low-traffic mailing list maintainers should subscribe to for release announcements and packaging help."

Thanks.

Lester

Update from the developer:

In case you wanted to add it to your ticket, here's the mailing list: https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/sshguard-maintainers"

I suggest you report a bug. If the bug and security fixes are significant then the package will be updated sooner rather than later. If the improvements are only slight then it will be left and packages requiring attention more urgently will be attended

Ubuntu is not a rolling release. Just because a new version is out doesn't mean it is made available immediately.

What is in the newer version that you so badly need?

I see several options for you besides creating a bug report or backport request.

As far as I can see all dependencies of the 1.6.4-* package for yakkety are met in xenial, so it should be possible to manually install the yakkety package on a xenial system.

There are PPAs with sshguard 1.6.4-* for Ubuntu 16.04. Maybe you can use one of these as a workaround.
see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=sshguard

Or you can try building the software from source.

Can you help with this problem?
