Setting up Squid is not an easy task. Installing the Squid packages is just step one... You can find informations on Squid e.g. under

http://www.deckle.co.za/squid-users-guide/Main_Page

You can't see much of squid. Squid is a service, it runs in the background. You can control services by the so called "init-scripts" inside /etc/init.d In your case

$ sudo /etc/init.d/squid start
$ sudo /etc/init.d/squid stop

Can you help with this problem?
