working of squid server

I know the basic working of a squid server , that is storing of visited webpage in their cache for future access . Can any one give me the packet level working of a server server . I want to know how a squid server behave with a L3 packet and also how can a squid server share the internet to the LAN

The server querys the site to see if a newer version exists, if not then the local version is used. This means the conent will be delivered quicker. I don't think it deals with L3 packets. The HTTP request is analysed then acted on. If a newer version is available it will be downloaded and recached.
