Audio CDs won't play

Asked by Roger E. Smith

All the cd players on my system respond with the same error message. "Error playing CD could not open CD device for reading". All the CD players show the CDs that are on the disk but wont play them. This problem developed suddenly as there was no problem playing CDs in the past. Its probably something simple but I have not been able to find it on my own. I can hear all the sounds when Ubuntu boots up so the problem doesn't seem to be in the sound card. I get the same error message whether the audio CD is in a USB drive or in the onboard cd/dvd drive. I would like the computer to play audio CDs the way it used to do not so long ago.

In the terminal mode I have added "sudo apt-get install gstreamer-alsa" with no improvements.

Can you help me please?

I have Ubuntu 7.04 installed on my pc, but am unable to figure out how to get sound to work. I know nothing about Linux OS, so will need some basic information to get started.
