I can't get the sound juicer "edit profiles" to stick.

Asked by Mitch Nielsen

With the sound juicer; when I try to make a change in "edit profiles" (wanting to reset for a MP3 format), no matter what I do, it just doesn't take. I've tryed several of the recomendations I've read about, but when I get to the end I only have "help" on the lower left, and "close" on the lower right. I don't have any "cancel" or "ok" buttons.

Have you tried putting the following code in? It made it work for me, but I'm not really sure what all it does.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Thanks CJ, I don't know what all that stuff was that entered my computer; I hope nothing creeps out in the middle of the night and turns me into --- "something unnatural or anythin' ". But I'm delighted it worked.

I answered that post the day after I installed Ubuntu, I found out what that command does. It just allows you to access stuff that Ubuntu has restricted such as LimeWire, different types of CD / DVD burning software, different types of turret downloading software, and other things of that nature.

You can turn it off when you update or upgrade by typing:
sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-restricted-extras
If you feel unsafe having it open all the time. I don't know if it's harmful, but I wouldn't want to find out the hard way so I keep mine turned off when I don't need it.

The "ubuntu-restricted-extras" package is a collection of closed source packages and codecs etc. Installing this will enable you to play mp3, wma, mov, avi etc. files. It also installs Microsoft compatible fonts, Java runtime libraries (which although free, is closed for development by the public).

Here's the best description: Installing this package will pull in support for MP3 playback and decoding, support for various other audio formats (gstreamer plugins), Microsoft fonts, Java runtime environment, Flash plugin, LAME (to create compressed audio files), and DVD playback.
