Scheduling automatic update cycles for different package lists

Asked by Pete Kelly

Hi, I have no idea if this is the right place to be asking this question but here goes...

Do you know if it's possible in the Software Sources program to specify different check frequencies for each set of packages listed under the "Updates" tab.

For example, I would like to be able to schedule checks for security updates every day, and have normal package updates checked only once a week or fortnight?

If not, is there a reason for this or is it just a feature that's not been thought about/implemented yet?

Hi Pete, The security updates are easy.
System/Administration/Software Sources/Updates
But that's where I step aside.

Are these enough links for the rest?

Hi

I know how to update my system by hand, however my question was about the scheduling of checks for individual sets of packages. The links you posted don't answer my question either.

I would like:

- security updates to check and notify daily,
- all other packages to check and notify on a different schedule.

Is this achievable using the current GUI in ubuntu/gnome? As I said before maybe I am asking this question in the wrong place?

Pete

By default all repositories are being scanned and used. You can tweak by selecting only security updates for example, but this will still trigger update-manager to notify about other updates as well. You may also choose to unselect the "update" repository, but that may not be a wise choice.

Hi again, Pete

A little clarification may be neccessary

The GUI method of restricting daily updates to security updates only is located and available as already described.

I stepped aside before Administration/Synaptic Package Manager/Settings/Set Internal Option. There, the GUI makes provision for inserting required change

Hope that helps
