i cant do nothing with out a Authentication password my passwords dont work ?

i have diffr5ent version ofubuntu/mine is ubunta 12.04 LTS on a IBM lab top with windows xpso my boot screen completly diffrent so it did not work now what could i try ?

i still havent been able to change exsisting user password OR any authentication passwords with out beening able to change any the PASSWORDS i can not get any control of computer cant chang users name cant mount or unmuont anything so i dont have any memory too work with even some how i need to change passwods ! please help!!!!

i buoght computer uot of a 2nd hand store like goodwill . my coputer is a IBMthink pad /with windows xp

What is the operating system on your computer - Windows XP or Ubuntu or both?
Are you able to log in to Ubuntu? If yes, please open a terminal (e.g. by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t) and issue the commands

lsb_release -a
uname -a
mount
df -h
