If you use the Pidgin IM client, you can simply enable logging.

what do you mean by and how do you enable logging? I want to be able to see IM's that have been sent and received. I am not very computer savy. I need dummy instructions.

For starters, you can't install Windows software in Ubuntu. To install software in Ubuntu, you need to use the Ubuntu Software Center.

To install Pidgin IM client, go to Applications > Ubuntu Software Center. Search for pidgin in the box. Then click on the Pidgin row, then click on the top row (Pidgin Instant Messenger). Click on the arrow on the right, then scroll down and click the Install button. Enter your password in the box that appears.

After it's installed, go to Applications > Internet > Pidgin Instant Messenger to start it. It will probably ask you to set up his account, so go ahead and do that. Logging is enabled by default, so you don't have to change anything else.

Logs are saved to /home/username/.purple/logs/. The .purple folder is a hidden folder, so you may want to enable showing hidden files in the file manager (View > Show hidden files).

Ok, I have the Pidgin IM installed. Now I want to know if there is anything that I can install that can record my kids IM messages so I can check them. I have tried to install Mcgruff and because I now have Linux, it won't install. Is there anything like this for Linux. I have been looking in the Ubuntu software and can't find anything comparable.

Re-read my last message. Pidgin already logs (records) conversations by default, so you don't need to install additional software.

Can you help with this problem?
