Can't update software from alerts

Asked by Dean von Germeten

The last time I ran update manager from alerts, everything went fine. But the orange triangle has been appearing again and I try to run updates but it doesn't work. I even changed repositories but still get; "W:Failed to fetch http://repo.mate-desktop.org/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. This is a repeating message, even with new repository.

I'm afraid I cannot download updates from alerts anymore. Why is that?

It looks like one of you manually added software source does not exist anymore.

Open the Software Center → Edit → Software sources → 2nd Tab
and uncheck the repository that matches the URL from the error message.

I did that, and changed repository to duke.edu. This is the message I received last time I tried again:

Medibuntu has been shut down, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

You have to remove medibuntu from your list of repository sources (the same way you did with mate-desktop), and everything should be clean again.
