Software Updater: Package Operation Failed 14.04
Hello all-
I am fairly new to Ubuntu within the last year. I have ran into some recent difficulty.
I had been running 13.10 with no issues.. software updater ran fine every few days and things were for the most part flawless. Just the differences in learning a new OS.
Within the last month, I obtained 14.04 system update and upgraded my version to the newer version. During the installation, it hit a couple errors.. reported them.. but continued to the installation. It got to a point where it failed.. but after the computer restarted, it now says that I am running 14.04. Things are fine except for Software Updater. Whenever it runs every few days, I get errored out ever single time. The error says as follows...
Package operation failed
The installation or removal of a software package failed.
I hit "ok" and move on.. then a couple days later it attempts updates again and same conclusion.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem other than reinstall the OS and start fresh with a clean copy of 14.04?
Thanks in advance for any help on this issue and please let me know if you need any additional information and i will try to supply.
Chris

I found a possible fix for this issue..
sudo apt-get purge libpostproc52:i386
sudo apt-get install libpostproc52
after i did that.. I went to software updater and it said I needed to reboot for updates to take effect. After I rebooted, I went to software updater again.. and did not get an error.. wound up getting the message that all system files are up to date.
I'll check this again in a couple of days whenever updates roll out again. IF all is good, I will post and mark this as problem solved.
If anyone else knows of a way to verify immediately, let me know.
Thanks guys!

You perfectly identified the command to solve the libpostproc52 installation problem, and the package management system seems to be in a consistent state again.
Two further remarks (although not answering your last question):
1. There are several packages installed on your system that have been installed once to satisfy dependencies, but that are no more needed (all those listed after "The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:").
You might do a cleanup action and remove them with the command "sudo apt-get autoremove".
2. Four packages are not upgraded to the highest version possible yet:
"The following packages have been kept back:

I cannot see the reason for this, maybe the output of the command
dpkg -l | grep gnash
provides some hints.
Great. Thanks for your help so far!

There was a pipe character missing in the command, please try again
dpkg -l | grep gnash
you can copy/paste also the other direction to avoid the need for retyping.

Hmm...
You have a 64bit system, but just the 32bit gnash packages installed, and I see the message about these packages "have been kept back", and they are still on the saucy version.
My ideas about that:
1. If everything works well, you might leave it as it is
or
2. You could try purging these packages and install the packages again, that should then lead to the current trusty 64bit version.
And your question about how often to do apt-get autoremove: Once a month, or after each new kernel installation is a reasonable frequency.
| Willem Hart (willem-csport) said : | #11 |
I have a similar situation. I followed the above mentioned options, however my error is slightly different and I do not quite know how to deal with it...

Please open a question of your own and paste the output of

I'm having a problem with some streaming that i'm doing through the machine.. and it made me think about the gnash. You had previously said that .."2. You could try purging these packages and install the packages again, that should then lead to the current trusty 64bit version."
I hate to ask you for more assistance but could you you possibly give me a little incite on how to purge these files and get the current version?
Thank you so much

Please do not piggyback on someone else's question but create your own question document on Launchpad https:/
The root cause for your problem seems to be completely different from Chris Weatherford's case.

Hello.
This may not be the correct thread to post my problems but if it is not, please direct me to the correct post and I may go there for further assistance, thanks.
The problems I experience are that all of my package managers (Synaptic, apt, aptitude, etc) fails to update the package database It seems all of the package managers in my Ubuntu 14.04 desktop install fails to function correctly.
In the lower right corner of the Taskbar I see a red circle with a white horizontal line inside of it. When I click on it a message in a dialog box states: "An error occurred. Please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get
in a terminal to see what is wrong.
The error message was: 'Error: Opening the cache (E: Parsing depency conflicts, E: Error
occurred while processing libnspr4 (NewVersion2), E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/
This is what I get in the terminal:
username:~$ sudo apt-get check
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Problem parsing dependency Conflicts
E: Error occurred while processing libnspr4 (NewVersion2)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
I have tried to report the problem using the automated error reporting dialog box but that fails as well.
Here is the output for: "uname -a" --> http://
If you need results to various commands, here are some pastebin posts I have recorded as I have tried seeking help to no avail from the Ubuntu IRC channel on Freenode:
Here is the output for "cat /etc/apt/
I hope there is a fix as this has been bugging me for the last several days. As a last resort I have thought about swapping over all of my data to another storage medium and reinstalling Ubuntu Trusty.

@Chris (cpari24):
Please do not piggyback on somebody else's question, but create your own Launchpad question document.
Follow steps 1 to 6 of https:/
There you find a link that creates your own question document.
The root cause for your problem seems to be completely different from Chris Weatherford's case.
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Chris Weatherford for more information if necessary.
