The reason you cant upgrade is that 10.10 needs to be upgraded to 11.04 but 11.04 is not supported any more.

It is actually possible to upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 to 11.10 to 12.04 but its not easy because of these only 12.04 is still supported.

see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for details

I strongly recommend you backup first then do a clean install of the version you want. 13.10 is the latest but I'd personally recommend 12.04 as its supported for longer.

If you want to try the update path however take a look here:

I suggest you remove Maverick and install Trusty (Ubuntu 14.04) it is LTS and supported til April 2019. It is due out in 10 days.

You can then reinstate your casual user data from backup.

Your initial question was not dissimilar to:

"Hi I am running Windows updates on Windows 95 but I cannot get any, why is this please?"

Maverick is dead and gone, no longer supported.

Can you help with this problem?
