password not recognised by terminal or synaptic package manager system was just installed

Asked by hynek

I just installed 10.4 xubuntu and neither the terminal nor the package manager would recognize the password . As I have no information in the system that could be misused I used HYNEK as any required password although I know it's weak. I provided for the possibility that different keyboard set up may play games and later could change it as administrator but still I'm getting reply that the password is wrong. Is there any possibility to correct this without reinstalling the system? The machine is an old one and I spent two days to get where I am at least I can read mail

Lucid desktop has literally 4 days support left. I recommend a clean install of Xubuntu 12.04

It is LTS and supported til April 2017.

You can upgrade direct from Lucid to Precise as it is LTS to LTS.

Thanks again for the suggestion and link but that will not allow me to use or change the password. There is something else wrong. As soon as I reboot I'm still getting the message that I have no administrative privileges , no password for sudo [I've been using it for years] and the upgrade is impossible, even though I've followed the instructions perhaps the fact that only "netroot" shows in recovery menu is the problem but with each attempt there is another kernel as an option and that was the reason why I reinstalled it because it was getting too slow

You can follow again the same procedure but this time instead of trying change password, create a new admin user.

Then you can do your "work" from there. The commands to create an admin user are:

    adduser <username>

Then complete the Questions.
After done , add the user to the sudo group=administrator.

    usermod -aG sudo <username>

@NikTh I don't think the group was sudo in 10.04

--------------
If Nik Th answer does not fix it .if

usermod -aG sudo <username>

gives you an error try

usermod -aG admin <username>

But I would seriously recommend you just install Precise (12.04) instead. A fresh install will be easier than upgrading.

If you have a newish PC go for Ubuntu

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

On older machines I recommend Xubuntu

http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/

You can try them both from a live DVD or USB stick then install the one you prefer.

Can you help with this problem?
